My chosen topic for my research simulation is, “Equity in education opportunities for children and their families in early childhood education.”

Write about your personal experience with this simulation process.

My personal experience with this simulation process was such that I had to take the information that I had learned about research and see how this applied to my research in the topic of my choice.  To accomplish this I determined that a good definition of the topic I choose would afford me the knowledge of the title or topic I was interested in. I found out that an equal access in education would mean that all children have equal opportunity to access to participate in all aspects of high quality education.   My three related subtopics are: Reaching the parents of minority and multilingual children; Finding and presenting equal learning opportunities to the families and their children and; Finding the areas where there are gaps in learning opportunities and pursuing policy change.

The next step was that it made me ponder on what my anticipation was for researching these topics. This was that it would be significant for young children and their families and the field of early childhood in several ways.  Firstly, for the most part, minority and multilingual children come from families who have different cultures and as a result they may  not be vocal about the difficulties they may be facing in the school system, some may not be confident in approaching school authorities because of the language barrier.  Reaching the parents could be a little more complex than anticipated due to these reasons, therefore, this helped me to see that it would be highly beneficial to find ways to make this communication process easier as it would make the children and their families more comfortable to approach the school and this would help the education professionals understand how to make the children and families welcome.  Secondly, finding equal learning opportunity programs for families would make learning easier for the minority and multilingual children. These families may not be aware of the programs that could help their children and so finding and presenting these programs to them could be of tremendous value to the families. Thirdly, because of the inequality in the system and the lost opportunities children have had as a result of not being a certain class or ethnicity, I consider it important to find ways to present petitions to the policy makers to make sure that there are equal opportunities for children regardless of which background they come from.
